Frequently asked questions about our soaps:
We've compiled answers to the questions we hear most often, covering everything from our handcrafted soaps and their natural ingredients to buying online and caring for your products. If you don't find what you're looking for, feel free to reach out!
What are the most common questions you get asked about your handcrafted soaps or their natural ingredients?
Some of the most common questions we receive are about how our soaps are made and whether natural ingredients really make a difference.
Many people ask if our soaps are safe for sensitive or dry skin. While everyoneâs skin is unique, our formulas are designed to be gentle, nourishing, and supportive of the skin barrier. We use time-honored ingredients that many people with sensitive skin find comforting.
Another frequent question is about tallowâwhy we use it and whether itâs beneficial. Tallow has been used in traditional soapmaking for generations and closely mimics the skinâs natural oils, making it deeply nourishing and protective.
Weâre also often asked about lye. Lye is a necessary part of real soapmaking, and through the saponification process it is fully transformed. The finished soap contains no lyeâonly gentle, skin-safe soap.
Customers also want to know if our soaps are truly natural and handmade. Every bar is handcrafted in small batches using carefully selected oils, butters, clays, botanicals, and essential oils. Nothing mass-produced, nothing unnecessary.
Lastly, people often ask what makes our soaps different from store-bought options. The difference lies in intentionâour soaps are created to nourish, not strip, and to offer an experience of care rather than just cleansing.
We welcome these questions because they matterâand we believe informed choices lead to better skin and better care.
Frequently Asked Questions about our cream:
What makes your creams different from other skincare?
Our creams are built around grass-fed tallow that we render ourselves, in small batches. Tallow closely mirrors the natural fats in human skin, so it absorbs readily and soothes rather than sits on top. We formulate for sensitive, reactive skin first — no essential oils, no added fragrance, and short ingredient lists where every ingredient earns its place.
Are your products safe for sensitive or reactive skin?
That's exactly who we make them for. Dewvelle was born out of skin that couldn't tolerate the fragrances and essential oils in most "natural" skincare. Everything is fragrance-free and formulated to be as gentle as possible. That said, everyone's skin is unique — if you're highly reactive, we always recommend patch testing a small amount first.
Why do you use tallow?
Tallow is one of the few ingredients that closely matches the fats already in our skin. That closeness is why it absorbs well and helps calm rather than coat. We use grass-fed tallow and render it by hand so we know exactly what's going into every batch.
Will your creams feel greasy?
No — that's the greasy myth people expect from tallow. We whip and formulate our creams to melt on contact and sink in, leaving skin soft and cushioned without a heavy film.
Do your products contain fragrance or essential oils?
Our Dewvelle creams are made without added fragrance or essential oils. Any faint natural scent comes only from the ingredients themselves. Some of our Laver soaps do use essential oil blends for scent — always clearly listed — so if you're fragrance-sensitive, check the ingredients or reach out and we'll point you to our unscented options.
What's the difference between Dewvelle and Laver?
Dewvelle is our botanical skincare line — tallow and herb-infused creams and balms made for sensitive, reactive skin. Laver is our handcrafted cold-process soap line. Both are made by hand in small batches in Thunder Bay, Ontario, with the same care for natural, thoughtful ingredients.
How should I store my cream or soap?
Keep creams in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight, since natural ingredients can soften in heat. For soap, let your bar dry out between uses on a well-draining dish — it'll last much longer.
How long do your products last?
Because we don't use synthetic preservatives, our products are made fresh in small batches. Check the label for best-by guidance, and use within the recommended window for best results.
Are your products handmade?
Every one of them. We render our own tallow, infuse our own botanicals, and hand-make each batch ourselves — no outsourcing, no mass production.
Do you ship?
yes. We shipp al over Canada

Is there anything special customers should know about how to best use or take care of your handcrafted soaps?
To get the most from your Laver Handcrafted Soap, a little care goes a long way. Each bar is made with natural oils, butters, and botanicals, so proper use ensures it lasts longer and continues to nourish your skin.
Tips for Use:
Lather Gently: Rub the bar between your hands or on a soft washcloth to create a creamy lather. Enjoy the nourishing foam and rinse thoroughly.
All-Over Care: Our soaps are safe for face, hands, and body, providing gentle cleansing without stripping natural moisture.
Tips for Storage and Longevity:
Keep It Dry Between Uses: Place your soap on a well-draining soap dish. Avoid leaving it in standing water, which can make it soften too quickly.
Slice Large Bars: If your bar is large, consider cutting it into smaller pieces to keep the unused portions dry.
Travel-Friendly Care: Use a ventilated soap case to prevent the bar from getting mushy while traveling.
Extra Benefits:
With proper care, your Laver soap can last longer, and the natural oils will continue to gently hydrate and protect your skin with every use.
By following these simple tips, youâll not only enjoy the luxurious feel and nourishing benefits of your soapâbut also make it a small, sustainable indulgence every day.
